Kennedy Works for the Unlawful (including himself)
Posted by IK1 on Saturday, July 14, 2007 1:40:52 PM
Ted Kennedy. In my opinion the most outspoken "blowhard" from the loony left. And I considered Kucinich in that evaluation.
Edward M. (Ted) Kennedy was born February 22, 1932, fourth son and last of nine children of Joseph P. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Because of his wealthy family's frequent shuttling among Boston, New York, and Palm Beach (and--while his father was ambassador to London--England), Kennedy attended several different private schools before enrolling in Milton Academy in 1946. Upon graduation from Milton in 1950 he enrolled at Harvard--like his older brothers before him. At the end of his freshman year, however, he was expelled for having another student take a Spanish final examination in his stead. Kennedy then enlisted for a two-year stint in the army. Not much of his time in the military is written about.
Ted Kennedy was a strong supporter of the
1965 Hart-Celler Act
--signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson--which dramatically changed US immigration policy.
"The bill will not flood our cities with immigrants. It will not upset the ethnic mix of our society. It will not relax the standards of admission. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs." (U.S. Senate, Subcommittee on Immigration and Naturalization of the Committee on the Judiciary, Washington, D.C., Feb. 10, 1965. pp. 1-3.).
Kennedy is now the ranking Democrat on the Senate Committee on Immigration, and remains a strong advocate for immigrants, both documented and undocumented.
Many people feel that this legislation--which substituted the
National Origins Quota Act (1924)--
dramatically changed the face of American society. Asians and Latin Americans flocked to American shores as never before, altering the ethnic composition of the United States forever. The Quota Act was very selective and favored immigrants from northern and western Europe. Proponents of the 1965 bill argued that immigration laws and quotas were discriminatory, and that American immigration policy should accept people not on the basis of their nationality. This also abolished the
Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882
.
